How to enable or disable the Windows key?

You want to enable or disable the Windows key? We explain here how it’s done.

It happens more often that one accidentally presses a button. Mostly this is not so bad, but if you catch the Windows key, the start menu opens in Windows 10 right away. That can be annoying. Therefore, the button can be disabled. And in case your key is already disabled, we also explain how to reactivate it.

Press the key combination [Windows] + [R] and enter ” regedit ” in the new window . Then press [Enter] .

2nd step:

Now navigate to the path ” HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Keyboard Layout ” and right-click in the window on the right. Then select the entries ” New ” and ” Binary value “.

3rd step:

Name the new binary value ” Scancode Map “. Make a double it.

4th step:

Under ” Value “, enter the following: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 03 00 00 00 00 05 BE 00 00 05 CE 00 00 00 00 00 . Then confirm your entry with ” OK “. After rebooting , the Windows key should be disabled.

Activate Windows key

Step 1:

Since you can no longer open the Run dialog with the keyboard shortcut [Windows] + [R] , enter ” regedit ” in the search bar of Windows. Then click on ” Registry Editor “.

2nd step:

Now navigate to the path ” HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Keyboard Layout ” and click with the right mouse button on the entry ” Scancode Map “. Then select ” Delete “. Then reboot and the button should work again.

QUICK STEPS:

  • Simultaneously press the [Windows] + [R] keys , type regedit and press [Enter] .
  • Open ” HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Keyboard Layout “, right-click in the right pane and select ” New ” and ” Binary Value “.
  • Name the value ” Scancode Map ” and double-click on it. Under Value, enter 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 03 00 00 00 00 05 BE 00 00 05 CE 00 00 00 00 00 and confirm with “OK”. Then reboot .
